The GKN China joint venture will produce the latest electric drive (eDrive) technology at the Shanghai plant, and it is expected that by 2018 China will become the global production center for GKN's top electric drive system. China is the fastest growing electric vehicle market in the world. GKN expects its Chinese joint venture Shanghai Natiefu Transmission Systems Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Natiefuâ€) to achieve an annual output of 1 million units of eDrive by 2025.
Natiefu will begin production of Gigain's multimode eTransmission technology for Chinese automakers in 2018, and plans to begin production of GKN's first complete eDrive system in 2019. The transformer and the eAxle gearbox are placed in the same package space. The system will first be applied to a small car platform from a European car manufacturer that will be sold worldwide.
The scale of Natiefu's eDrive production center in China will continue to grow in the next seven years, and new supply agreements with a number of domestic and foreign automakers will also begin. By 2025, the market predicts that China's electric and hybrid vehicle production will increase by more than 400%, achieving an annual output of nearly 4 million units*. GKN expects that the Natiefu eDrive production center will achieve an annual production of more than 1 million units in 2025.

In addition to increasing investment in eDrive capacity, GKN and Na Tiefu will also expand their engineering and technical development resources in the region through the Na Tiefu Technology Center in Shanghai. The new technology center creates more than 300 jobs and assists Chinese customers in applying GKN eDrive, all-wheel drive (AWD) and constant velocity joint system technology locally.

GKN and Natiefu expanded their partnership in 2013 to introduce torque management technology and AWD systems to China.
