In 2005, the global demand for ethylene and propylene increased to 107 million tons and 67.1 million tons respectively. It is predicted that the annual growth rate of ethylene demand will be 4.3% in the next five years, and the annual growth rate of propylene demand during this period will be 4.8%. In order to meet this demand growth, ethylene production capacity will increase by 5.4% year-on-year from 2005 to 2010, compared to 3.5% in the previous five years. From 2005 to 2010, the propylene production capacity will increase by 5.1% annually, while the annual growth rate from 2000 to 2005 will be 4.1%.
By 2010, the global supply of ethylene will reach 133 million tons, and most of the new capacity will be in the Middle East and Asia, accounting for 51% and 36%, respectively.
