The Maywood Fire Department responded to a significant fire early Sunday morning in a vacant three-story building located at 907 S. 3rd Ave. Upon arrival, crews activated a Box Alarm due to heavy fire conditions in the attic and on the top floor. Both Maywood and Melrose Park fire departments were on scene, working together to bring the blaze under control.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was present at the incident and captured several striking images that highlight the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters. His photos show the emergency crews in action, demonstrating their professionalism and dedication during a challenging situation.
One image features a Melrose Park lieutenant surveying the rear of the building before deploying their aerial apparatus. Another shows the Melrose Park quint making its way to the scene, ready to assist. A third photo captures firefighters from the Melrose Park unit inspecting conditions on the upper floor after removing plywood from a window.
Maywood firefighters can be seen working from the tip of their aerial, while flames are visible bursting through the roof and out of the upper-floor windows. A dramatic shot shows the Melrose Park truck opening up their master stream, and another highlights both units applying water through the roof to suppress the fire.
Additional photos show Maywood firefighters working to gain better access to the attic, using tools like pike poles to create larger openings. One particularly intense image captures flames rising over the head of a firefighter operating from the aerial.
