Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have used 4D printing technology to create objects that can change shape. The researchers used two materials with different properties for 3D printing. One type of material is hard plastic and is fixed in shape after printing, while the other material is water-absorbing and may double when immersed in water.
This water-absorbing material, developed by the 3D printing company Stratasys in Minnesota, has not been disclosed. In this study, the researchers printed a square grid measuring approximately 15 inches or 38 centimeters on each side. When they placed the grid in water, they found that the absorbent material began to stretch. The researchers used 3D printing to create a shape similar to the English abbreviation MIT and transform it into another SAL-like English abbreviation.
