Analysis of Present Status of Domestic Pepper Germplasm Resources
The collection and preservation of pepper germplasm resources in China have not yet been incorporated into the International Plant Resources Committee (IBPGR). However, our country attaches great importance to research on resources. Since the “6th Five-Year Planâ€, the collection and research of pepper resources has been included in the national scientific and technological research projects. Until 1990, germplasm materials imported into the national germplasm resource bank have reached More than 2,000 copies. In addition, China is a vast country with complex climate and soil types and a variety of cultivation systems. It is impossible to put all resources into storage, and the breeders continue to innovate resources; in fact, China’s current chili resources are far more than this number; in general, Pepper resources are very rich.
The state has organized specialized collection and appraisal of large-scale pepper varieties, mainly by the Institute of Vegetables and Flowers of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Institute of Variety Resources of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Institute of Vegetables of the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Institute of Horticulture at the Northwest Agricultural University, and Hunan Province. The Institute of Vegetable Research of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other units jointly established a research project on germplasm resources. After the “6th Five-Yearâ€, “July 5thâ€, and “Eighth Five-Year†periods, the national pepper resources were systematically investigated and sorted out. The focus was on Yunnan. In the Shennongjia region of Tibet, Hubei, germplasm resources were investigated and collected, and 1028 resources were identified and evaluated. The statistical analysis was performed on the VC content, capsaicin content, dry matter content, disease resistance and other indicators. Some breeding units and breeders have also collated and evaluated their respective regional resources for their own research needs. The establishment of the germplasm resources bank of the crops can well retain high-quality germplasm resources and provide very practical help for the survival of the fittest.
