Gordon J. Nord, Jr. was in Bedford Park yesterday when the Burbank Fire Department received a call about a house fire. Upon arrival, crews found intense flames on the second floor of a single-family home. Firefighters launched an interior attack but had to temporarily withdraw while the roof was ventilated. Once the ventilation was complete, they were able to re-engage and make progress against the fire.
Bedford Park, Bridgeview, and Oak Lawn fire companies provided assistance to the Burbank team. The scene was chaotic but well-managed, with multiple units working together to contain the blaze. A Bedford Park firefighter can be seen cutting through a fence to gain access to the yard, while others climbed onto the roof to ventilate the structure. Smoke was visible from multiple windows and eaves as firefighters worked to control the situation.
One photo shows a ground ladder placed by an engineer, giving interior crews a safe exit point in case of emergency. Another image captures heavy smoke billowing from the roof as a firefighter works to create a vent hole. As the fire raged on the second floor, crews made several openings in the roof to reduce heat and improve visibility.
A Bedford Park truck (Truck 709) was seen on the scene, and another unit, Truck 206, was positioned at a hydrant. Oak Lawn’s Quint 3 responded and served as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), ready to assist if needed. Firefighters could be seen working on multiple vent holes, carefully managing the flow of heat and smoke.
As the fire continued to consume the second floor, crews retreated briefly before re-entering once conditions improved. The incident highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, and quick decision-making under pressure. The efforts of all involved helped prevent further damage and ensured the safety of the surrounding area.
