The Maywood Fire Department responded to a significant fire early Sunday morning at a vacant three-story building located at 907 S. 3rd Ave. Upon arrival, crews issued a Box Alarm due to the intense fire in the attic and on the top floor. Both Maywood and Melrose Park fire companies were dispatched and worked together to bring the blaze under control.
Gordon J. Nord, Jr., a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several powerful images that highlight the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters. His photos show the challenges faced by the crews as they tackled the flames from multiple angles.
One image features a Melrose Park lieutenant assessing the rear of the building before deploying their aerial ladder. Another shows the Melrose Park quint making its way to the scene, while a third captures firefighters from Melrose Park inspecting conditions on the upper floor after removing plywood from a window.
Maywood firefighters can be seen working from the tip of their aerial, while another photo shows flames bursting through the roof and exiting the upper-floor windows. A dramatic shot also captures the Melrose Park truck operating its master stream, with both departments applying water from above.
Additional images depict Maywood firefighters working to gain better access to the attic fire, using a pike pole to open up a larger area. In one particularly intense moment, flames are seen rising over the head of a firefighter working from the aerial.
