Last night, Chicago Engine 99 was called to what was initially thought to be a rubbish fire in the rear of 3401 S. Lawndale Avenue, a location known for having guard dogs. Upon arrival, firefighters quickly realized the situation was more serious than expected. The fire was actually inside the building, prompting Engine 99 to request a full working fire response. Shortly after, the alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm, signaling a major incident.
Thick black smoke poured from the building, visible for several blocks away. Deputy District 4 (2-2-4) arrived on scene and reported flames coming through the roof, leading to an immediate escalation to a 2-11 alarm. The structure was an industrial brick building with a steel deck roof, making the fire particularly challenging to control.
Firefighters deployed multiple resources, including Snorkel 1, Tower 5, and Tower 54, which used elevated master streams alongside several 2.5-inch hand lines. As crews worked to gain access, they had to cut through heavy overhead doors, a process that was captured by Gordon J. Nord, Jr., who was nearby and witnessed the entire event.
Gordon shared a series of photos showing the progression of the fire and the firefighters’ efforts. His images highlight the intensity of the blaze, with thick smoke billowing from the building and flames visible through the roof. He also captured the moment when Engine 99’s deck gun was put into action, as well as the coordinated efforts of the tower ladders and other apparatus.
The fire was clearly a significant event, drawing attention from both residents and emergency responders. With heavy fire involvement and the need for multiple aerial units, it was clear that this was no small incident. Firefighters worked tirelessly under difficult conditions to bring the blaze under control.
