Chicago firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 6600 block of Onarga on the city’s Northwest Side before 7 p.m. this evening. The cold weather, with temperatures in the single digits, made the situation more challenging for Engine 119, which encountered two frozen hydrants. However, Engine 79 managed to locate a functioning hydrant, helping to control the blaze. Firefighters discovered a victim inside the home and quickly transported her to an ambulance.
A photo from Steve Redick shows light smoke venting from the house, highlighting the difficult conditions faced by first responders. The Chicago Tribune reported that a 79-year-old woman was in serious-to-critical condition after being rescued from the burning building around 7 p.m. She was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital with injuries from smoke inhalation.
Several images captured by Redick show firefighters working to ventilate the roof and gain access to the structure. One photo highlights Engine 79, which found a working hydrant, while Engine 119 struggled with frozen ones. Another image shows firefighters using a ground ladder for safety as they worked from the roof.
The incident underscores the challenges of responding to fires during extreme cold weather. Despite the difficulties, the quick actions of the firefighters helped save a life. More photos from the scene can be viewed in a gallery posted by Steve Redick.
