China is expected to become the world's inorganic pigment manufacturing center

China is currently the second-largest producer of titanium dioxide in the world, following the United States. As productivity and product quality continue to improve across various inorganic pigments, including titanium dioxide and iron oxide, China is well on its way to becoming a global leader in this industry. This shift not only reflects the country’s growing industrial capabilities but also signals its rising influence in the international market. Titanium dioxide is a key inorganic pigment widely used in paints, plastics, and other industries. However, recent trends show that energy and raw material costs have been rising, while developed countries have reached a mature stage in their titanium dioxide production. As a result, investment in new production capacity in these regions is limited, with an expected annual growth rate of only 1.4% in the coming years. This has prompted multinational corporations to look toward Asia, particularly China, for future growth opportunities. Indeed, the global production of titanium dioxide is gradually shifting to China. Large-scale chlorinated titanium dioxide projects are now under construction in provinces such as Zhejiang, Shandong, and Liaoning, with plans to come online before and after 2010. These projects are being funded by companies from the U.S., Japan, and Australia. According to current expansion plans and new construction projects, China's titanium dioxide production capacity is expected to increase by 300,000 tons before 2008, and by about 500,000 tons by 2010. By then, China's total production capacity could reach approximately 1.6 million tons, surpassing the U.S. as the world’s largest producer. The adoption of advanced chlorination technology has significantly improved the quality of Chinese-made titanium dioxide, further strengthening its competitiveness. Similarly, China's iron oxide industry is also showing strong growth. International manufacturers like Bayer (Germany) and Lockwood (UK) have established joint ventures or wholly-owned subsidiaries in major coastal cities such as Shanghai, Fuyang, Zhejiang, Changshu, and Shenzhen. These regions have become key production hubs for overseas firms. Currently, these enterprises account for 15% of China’s total iron oxide production capacity, reaching 120,000 tons per year. Historically, China has exported more iron oxide, zinc oxide white, and chromium pigments than it imported. However, titanium dioxide has been an exception, with imports exceeding exports. Nevertheless, many imported titanium dioxide products are processed through trade methods like bonded warehouses or processing trade, eventually being re-exported. This suggests that the overall import-export balance for titanium dioxide is relatively stable. Looking ahead, as China's production capacity and product quality continue to rise, the share of imported titanium dioxide is likely to decrease, while exports are expected to grow strongly. China is poised to become a net exporter of titanium dioxide in the near future. The influx of foreign investment into China’s inorganic pigment sector has accelerated the country’s emergence as a global production and sales hub. At the same time, it has intensified competition within the domestic market. To remain competitive, Chinese inorganic pigment companies must continue to invest in technological upgrades and enhance their global market presence.
