I served as a contract Firefighter/Paramedic with the Geneva Fire Department from December 1st, 1982, to November 30th, 1989. During my time there, I had the opportunity to organize a live fire training exercise between 1985 and 1988. The event took place on the east side of Kirk Road, just north of Illinois Route 38. At that time, the area around the intersection was still in the early stages of development, making it a perfect spot for such training.
In the group photo, you can spot the current Fire Chief, Steve Olson, wearing a red helmet on the far left of the second row. The current Deputy Chief, Jerry Koster, is also in a red helmet, positioned second from the right in the same row. Frank Johnson, who was the former chief at the time, is standing in the front center wearing a white T-shirt. All the other officers in red helmets have since retired. Several of the firefighters in the picture are now serving with other fire departments in the western suburbs, including Batavia, Carol Stream, Oak Park, Saint Charles, and Naperville.
It’s always interesting to look back and see how much has changed over the years, both in the community and in the fire service. These photos serve as a great reminder of the dedication and hard work that went into keeping our neighborhoods safe.
