Here's a message from Brian Murphy:
These newspaper clippings, taken from the Waukegan News-Sun, show a major fire that broke out at the former Giess-Plfeger Tanning Company on Waukegan’s Lakefront. The incident occurred on November 15, 1973, and involved a large section of the building—constructed with heavy timber—which was in the process of being demolished after the property was sold to Commonwealth Edison. The Waukegan Generating Station is located just next to the site.
I apologize for the quality of these clippings—they’ve been sitting in a shoebox for over 40 years, so they’re not in great condition. If anyone has memories of this fire or any details about what happened that day, I’d love to hear from you. It’s always interesting to learn more about local history.
Best regards,
Brian Murphy
