Making an Impact: The Relief Efforts in Nepal

By Joe Speicher, Executive Director, Autodesk Foundation The devastation in Kathmandu this month has been truly heartbreaking. As the dust settles and the world takes a moment to process what has happened, it’s heartening to see the global community come together in support. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million in aid, telecom companies are offering free communication services to those in Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has deployed over 100 troops, including specialized urban search-and-rescue teams, to the region. These efforts reflect a powerful collective response to a crisis that demands immediate action and long-term commitment. As an organization focused on using design and technology for good, the Autodesk Foundation is always looking for ways to contribute meaningfully. We believe that leveraging our expertise in design and the built environment can make a real difference in the recovery and rebuilding of Kathmandu. This is why we focus our resources on organizations that align with our mission—those who understand that thoughtful, sustainable design isn’t just about aesthetics, but about saving lives and building safer communities. **The Design Opportunity** [Image: A photo of temporary shelters being built in the aftermath of the earthquake] Once the immediate relief efforts are underway and the rubble is cleared, the real challenge begins: rebuilding infrastructure, homes, and businesses to restore normalcy. Too often, this phase is overlooked or poorly managed, leading to long-term consequences. Fortunately, some of our partners have spent years working in post-disaster environments, ensuring that reconstruction is done with resilience and care. One such partner is Build Change, a nonprofit with over a decade of experience constructing safe homes and schools in disaster-affected areas. They work closely with local governments to develop and enforce seismic building codes, and then train local contractors to build structures that are both cost-effective and resilient. Just a day after the earthquake, they reached out to us, confirming that they are already mobilizing a team to respond in Nepal. If you believe that design can change the world, supporting Build Change is one of the most impactful things you can do. **How to Help** Many people want to help, but aren’t sure how to make a meaningful difference. Here are a few ways you can get involved: 1. **Donate to Build Change** – This is one of the most effective ways to ensure that the rebuilding process in Nepal is done safely and sustainably. Their work directly impacts the future of communities by promoting better construction practices. 2. **Support the Creative Market Community** – For the month of May, nearly 500 shops on Creative Market are donating up to 100% of their earnings to Nepal relief efforts. With support from the Autodesk Foundation, Creative Market will match the first $20,000 in donations. All funds go to All Hands, a non-profit that supports both immediate and long-term recovery. Check out their blog for more details. 3. **Share Photos from the Pixlr Challenge** – Through the Autodesk Foundation's support, Pixlr is donating $20,000 to Build Change this month. Additionally, their weekly challenge in early May encouraged users to share photos with the theme “Message for Nepal.” It’s a great way to spread awareness and support the cause. Visit the Pixlr blog to learn more. At Autodesk, we’re not just standing by—we’re actively involved. From working with partners like Build Change to encouraging our employees to volunteer and donate, we’re committed to making a lasting impact. Natural disasters are a part of life, but we can all play a role in building a safer, more resilient future. Together, we can help create a better tomorrow for the people of Nepal.
