Technology from Delcam, Pan Computing and Project Escher Now Integrated into Autodesk’s 3D Printing Software
Machining interfaces after additive manufacturing
Since the major release of Netfabb 2017 in September, Autodesk has been reinforcing its vision of making Netfabb a full-stack solution for additive manufacturing. The software has now received powerful upgrades, including enhanced simulation tools, new hybrid manufacturing features, and support for collaborative multi-head 3D printing.
These improvements solidify Netfabb's position as a complete toolset for additive manufacturing, enabling users to test, optimize, prepare, and produce high-quality parts efficiently.
Autodesk Netfabb is designed to help additive manufacturing professionals move seamlessly from CAD design to finished products. With integrated tools for design and additive manufacturing, it offers insights that help businesses of all sizes improve material choices, simulate processes, optimize designs, and control machines more effectively.
"Netfabb is not only user-friendly but also handles much of the complex work involved in preparing models for 3D printing," said Dan Ko, Strategic Initiatives Lead at Shapeways. "It automates many common file preparation tasks, which would otherwise take a lot of time and effort. Without Netfabb, each build would be significantly more labor-intensive."
The latest update brings new tools aimed at helping users stay ahead in the competitive world of additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Key additions include:
Cloud-Based Simulation
The slow adoption of metal 3D printing has often been due to unpredictable outcomes and high costs. Netfabb's simulation tools, powered by technology from Pan Computing, help predict and adjust for deformation during the process. This allows designers and engineers to refine their designs and reduce the number of physical iterations needed.
Hybrid Subtractive and Additive Workflows
Subtractive methods are often necessary to achieve the desired surface finish on additively manufactured parts. Netfabb now includes advanced modeling capabilities based on Autodesk (formerly Delcam) PowerShape technology, allowing users to plan near-net shapes and maintain the original model throughout the process. This creates a seamless connection between build preparation and post-processing.
Collaborative Multi-head 3D Printing
Thanks to technology from Project Escher, Netfabb now supports multi-head printing, where multiple print heads work together to produce large, detailed parts faster. Autodesk is also open-sourcing the hardware specs and software required for this technology, enabling third-party manufacturers to develop faster, more efficient multi-head printers.
"The new tools in Netfabb are really exciting," said Stephen Anderson, Software Director at Renishaw. "We're thrilled to collaborate with Autodesk to provide a smoother additive manufacturing experience for our shared customers. We’re looking forward to future integrations with the QuantAM workbench, which will ensure optimal performance on Renishaw systems."
"Netfabb is accelerating the entire additive manufacturing workflow by giving engineers and designers the tools they need to create better parts, streamline their processes, and boost printer efficiency," said Mark Forth, Manager of Manufacturing Industry Strategy at Autodesk. "With cloud-based simulation, hybrid workflows, and multi-head printing, we're delivering the most powerful and comprehensive additive solution available."
