Skokie Fire Department has recently received a brand-new ambulance for Station 18, marking the first time the department has acquired a Horton unit. Previously, the station operated with Medtec ambulances, and before that, Road Rescue models. Skokie follows a purchasing process through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, which maintains a list of approved suppliers. At the time this ambulance was ordered, Horton was on the list, along with other manufacturers like Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec—though that particular list has since expired.
The new ambulance, a 2009/2010 model, represents a significant upgrade for Station 18. The previous ambulance, a 2003 Medtec, has been reclassified as Ambulance 17R, while the older 2000 Road Rescue unit, which had previously served as Ambulance 17R, was traded in. This transition highlights the ongoing modernization efforts within the department.
Photos of the new Horton ambulance are now available. The first image shows the exterior of the unit, highlighting its sleek design and clear visibility from the front. Another photo captures the passenger side, giving a closer look at the interior layout and equipment. Inside, the ambulance is fully equipped with modern medical tools and features, ensuring optimal care for patients during transport. A rear view of the unit also showcases the full chevron striping and LED lighting, adding both visibility and style.
Additionally, the long-awaited photo of the Ford/Taylor Made command unit for Battalion 16 is now available, filling a gap in the department’s public documentation. This unit plays a critical role in managing emergency operations and is an essential part of Skokie’s fire response system.
With these updates, Skokie continues to invest in the safety and efficiency of its emergency services, ensuring that its crews have the best possible equipment to serve the community.
