Skokie updates

Skokie Fire Department has recently introduced a brand-new ambulance to Station 18. This 2009/2010 model marks the first time the department has acquired a Horton ambulance, a significant shift from its previous fleet. Prior to this, Station 18 had been using Medtec units, and before that, Road Rescue models. The selection of suppliers is managed through the Northwest Municipal Conference Suburban Purchasing Cooperative, which maintains an approved list of vendors. At the time of this purchase, Horton was on that list, along with other manufacturers like Wheeled Coach and Foster Coach/Medtec, though that particular list has since expired. The new Horton Type I ambulance represents an upgrade in both design and functionality. It’s now the primary unit stationed at Station 18, replacing the older 2003 Medtec ambulance, which has been reclassified as Ambulance 17R. The previous 2000 Road Rescue model, which had served as Ambulance 17R, was eventually traded in. This transition ensures that the department continues to provide high-quality emergency services with modern equipment. Inside the new ambulance, the layout has been optimized for efficiency and comfort. The interior features updated medical equipment and improved patient care areas, making it more suitable for responding to a wide range of emergencies. The exterior also boasts a striking chevron stripe pattern and LED lighting, enhancing visibility and safety during nighttime operations. Several photos have been taken to showcase the new unit. One image highlights the front of the ambulance, while another captures the passenger side, giving a full view of the vehicle's design. A third photo provides a detailed look at the interior, and a fourth shows the rear with the full chevron striping and lighting system. Additionally, the long-awaited photo of the Ford/Taylor Made command unit assigned to Battalion 16 is now available, completing the visual documentation of Skokie’s recent fleet updates. This unit plays a crucial role in managing emergency responses across the city and is an essential part of the department’s operational structure.
