Li pointed out that with the start of the 11th Five-Year Plan, the mainland's petrochemical sector was entering a phase of accelerated development. New projects with capacities ranging from 800,000 to 1 million tons were being launched, which would enhance technical capabilities, scale, and product diversity. However, challenges remained, including rising dependence on oil resources, increasing energy consumption, and environmental pressures. Meeting growing market demand proved difficult, prompting the need for broader international cooperation and knowledge sharing. Recent years have seen a steady rise in cross-strait petrochemical trade. By 2006, Taiwan had become the fourth-largest supplier of petrochemical products to the mainland, with imports reaching $13.7 billion, or 12.1% of China’s total petrochemical imports. Zhou Xinhuai, director of the Taiwan Petrochemical Industry Association, noted that the mainland's expanding demand offered great opportunities for Taiwanese companies. Currently, two-thirds of Taiwan’s petrochemical sales are made in the mainland, and investments in third markets also play a major role. Zhou added that the petrochemical sectors on both sides complement each other well. The mainland excels in refining technology, while Taiwan has a strong downstream industry, including PE, PP, PS, PVC, and ABS. This synergy is driving deeper cooperation. Additionally, joint efforts in the Middle East market could create more business opportunities. The conference covered various topics, including industry trends, the impact of Middle Eastern developments, environmental upgrades, synthetic material research, and HSE system implementation. Hosted in Tianjin, the event took advantage of the city's strategic importance in the Bohai Economic Circle. Attendees from Taiwan expressed interest in exploring investment prospects in the region. Overall, the meeting underscored the potential for stronger ties and mutual growth in the petrochemical sector.
