The color of fire trucks

The Wall Street Journal recently published an article that delves into a long-standing discussion within the fire service: the color of emergency vehicles. The piece highlights a small district in Florida that has taken a different approach by using a non-traditional color for its fire apparatus. In most parts of the country, red remains the standard for emergency vehicles—often referred to as "fire-engine red." However, for nearly 40 years, firefighters in Palm Beach Gardens have chosen a striking yellow-green hue. They believe this color is more visible, especially during the heavy rains and poor visibility typical of South Florida summers. Fire Chief Pete Bergel frequently points to his 30 years of experience with the department as proof, noting that no fire truck has ever been rear-ended. “The color is in your face,” he says, emphasizing how it stands out on the road. This choice isn’t unique to Palm Beach Gardens. Several local departments across different divisions have also opted for colors other than red. These include Elk Grove Township (Division 1), Pingree-Grove and Rutland-Dundee (Division 2), Glencoe (Division 3), Fox Lake and Winthrop Harbor (Division 4), Clarendon Hills (Division 10), Fox River & Countryside (Division 13), Coal City (Division 15), Lisle-Woodridge (Division 16), Elwood (Division 19), and Crete (Division 27). Some of these departments previously used white, yellow, or lime green before transitioning to red or red-based color schemes. The debate over vehicle color isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about safety and visibility. While red is widely used and recognized, some departments argue that alternative colors can offer better visibility in certain conditions. This ongoing conversation reflects the evolving nature of emergency response and the importance of adapting to real-world challenges. You can read the full Wall Street Journal article here.
