Heavy storms swept through the area on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, drenching many suburbs with heavy rainfall that led to widespread flooding and road closures. Emergency crews from local fire departments were deployed to assist stranded motorists and residents who found themselves unable to leave their homes due to rising waters.
The Buffalo Grove Fire Department activated a MABAS Box Alarm, calling for swift water rescue teams and boats from divisions 1 and 4. In response, departments from Long Grove, Prospect Heights, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Libertyville, and Mount Prospect, along with several neighboring agencies, sent personnel and equipment to support the effort on St. Mary’s Parkway between Raupp Boulevard and Lincoln Terrace.
Larry Shapiro captured a series of powerful images and a video (to be released soon) documenting the scene. The photos show firefighters navigating flooded streets, rescuing residents, and using inflatable boats to reach those in need. One image highlights the high water levels that forced evacuations, while another shows a firefighter assisting a resident with medical needs. Additional photos depict the coordinated response, including Libertyville's swift water team and a new Buffalo Grove Medtec ambulance on standby.
Throughout the operation, rain continued to fall sporadically, adding to the challenges faced by first responders. A final image shows a firefighter undergoing decontamination after the mission. A full gallery of photos is available for viewing online.
