Tim Olk traveled two hours south of Chicago to Hoopeston, Illinois, to capture the massive fire burning at a large tire recycling facility. The blaze, which broke out early Wednesday morning, has become one of the most significant emergencies in the town's history.
The fire engulfed the south end of the 400,000-square-foot brick building at J&R Used Tire Service Inc., located on Maple Street. Firefighters from multiple departments—including Hoopeston, Danville, and surrounding areas—rushed to the scene, where they faced an overwhelming challenge. According to Hoopeston Fire Chief Cliff Crabtree, the fire was so intense that crews had to take a defensive approach, as the structure was filled with tires that are notoriously difficult to extinguish.
Several employees were at the facility when the fire started, but all managed to escape without serious injury. One individual was taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation but was later released. The business, owned by Rodney and Janie Rogers, is one of the largest tire recyclers in Illinois and Indiana, serving nearly 1,000 clients. Despite the damage, Rogers is working to restart operations as soon as possible, with help from other recyclers in the region.
Residents living near the facility were evacuated, and emergency shelters were set up at local schools and churches. Smoke from the fire was visible over 20 miles away, creating dark clouds that loomed over the horizon. Air quality was closely monitored, and hazardous materials teams were on site to ensure public safety.
Firefighters also faced extreme heat and worked tirelessly to bring water to the scene. Local businesses, including farms and water companies, donated supplies to keep the firefighting efforts going. The community rallied behind the responders, offering food, water, and support. "The only thing more overwhelming than the fire is the support from the community," said Crabtree.
As the fire continued to burn, officials warned it could last several days. For now, the focus remains on containing the blaze and ensuring the safety of residents and first responders. Tim Olk’s photographs captured the intensity of the situation, showing the scale of the disaster and the determination of those working to control it.
