Extra-Alarm fire in downstate Hoopeston

Tim Olk traveled two hours south of Chicago to Hoopeston, IL, to capture the massive fire burning at a large tire recycling facility. The blaze, which erupted early Wednesday morning, has become one of the most significant emergencies in the town's history. The fire broke out at J&R Used Tire Service Inc., located on Maple Street. Firefighters from multiple departments, including Hoopeston, Danville, and surrounding areas, rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the entire south end of the 400,000-square-foot brick building engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Cliff Crabtree described the situation as overwhelming, noting that the nature of the fire made it impossible to save the structure. Despite their efforts, the fire continued to spread, with officials warning it could burn for days. Several employees were inside the facility when the fire started, but all managed to escape without serious injury. One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but was later released. Residents in nearby neighborhoods were evacuated, and emergency shelters were set up at local schools and churches. The Danville Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was also on site to monitor air quality due to the heavy smoke. Local businesses and farmers stepped in to help, providing water from various sources to keep firefighting efforts going. The Red Cross and community members offered support, bringing food and cooling tents to assist firefighters battling the intense heat. “It’s been an incredible show of community spirit,” said Crabtree, who expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support. “People have been calling nonstop, offering donations and helping those on the front lines.” The fire, visible for miles, created thick clouds of dark smoke that could be seen as far as the Bismarck area. The smell of burning rubber filled the air, and residents described the scene as unlike anything they had ever seen. Rogers, the business owner, is working to restart operations as soon as possible, with assistance from other recyclers. His company serves over 800 customers in Illinois and Indiana, making it one of the largest tire recycling operations in the state. As the fire continues, the community remains united in its efforts to support first responders and rebuild what was lost.
