According to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the United States’ domestic crude oil production exceeded its imports for the first time in 20 years in October.
Tillnerson said that "regardless of the assessment method adopted," China's shale reserves exceed the U.S., but complex geological conditions have limited exploitation. They are often buried deeper, in remote locations, and lack the water resources necessary for hydro-cracking.
ExxonMobil has partnered with PetroChina (7.56, -0.03, -0.40%) company to evaluate the potential of China's shale resources, but it is still in the early stages of its estimation.
