Foreign thermonuclear experimental reactors enter a decisive phase

According to news from Xinhua News Agency, the ITER Council held a special meeting at the location of the organization from 27th to 28th in Cadarache, southern France, and officially approved the "benchmark document." This marks that the ITER plan has entered a decisive stage.

The ITER organization stated in a communique issued after the meeting that directors from the European Union, China, the USA, Japan, South Korea, Russia and India, as well as an observer of the IAEA participated in the meeting. The members of the seven parties unanimously adopted the "benchmark document," which includes two important contents. The first is the project schedule and the second is the project budget.

In terms of timetables, the ITER organization expects to officially begin the nuclear reactor response in March 2027. The council also hopes to advance the nuclear reactor response time to 2026 if conditions permit. In terms of budget, the council has set a cap on the funding for the ITER program, but the communique did not disclose the specific amount. The council also decided to appoint the island as the director general of the ITER organization to replace Ikeda, who had previously resigned. The latter served as director of the ITER organization since November 2005.

On the 28th, Luo Delong, deputy director of the China Nuclear Fusion Energy Project Implementation Center, received a phone interview with Xinhua News Agency reporters after the meeting. He said that participating in the ITER program reflects China’s determination to develop clean energy.

Rodron said that ITER is also known as the “Artificial Sun” program. Its purpose is to develop clean energy. China’s participation reflects both the determination of the Chinese government in this regard and its long-term energy strategy. He said that China has become one of the largest energy consumers in the world. To solve this problem, it must occupy a place in the energy production field. At present, China continues to work hard on fossil energy and fissile energy. On the one hand, it is also looking for alternative energy sources. Now, ITER may be a truly long-term, reliable solution.

Rodden said that as a participant in the ITER program, China has devoted great efforts to this end. First of all, in the process of establishing the organization, China has done a very specific job and will actively participate in the operation and management of the ITER organization in the future. Second, in terms of funding, China has assumed a share of nearly 10%. Third, China is in the country. Construction of 10% of the components; Fourth, in the future operation, China hopes to conduct its own tests on the reactor. At present, Chinese researchers are working on existing fusion devices in the country to make necessary preparations for the operational phase.

The ITER experimental reactor has a height of 24 meters and a diameter of 30 meters. It is planned to generate a plasma volume of 840 cubic meters, a holding time of 400 seconds, a fusion energy of 500 megawatts, a low ratio of output to input energy of 10:1, and a high of 30. :1. According to experts, this plan is based on a large number of research results that have been made, and the possibility of success is very high.
