Germany proposes modular integration standards for electric vehicle charging

German automakers Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, and Volkswagen jointly proposed the global standard for module connector system integration for charging electric vehicles in late September 2010.

Global integration standards ensure that users can use the grid directly and easily, are not subject to car brand restrictions, and can accept the supply of electricity. Two major AC charger standards have been proposed: IEC 62196-2 Type 1 (Japan/SAE J1772 recommendation) and IEC 62196-2 Type 2 recommendation (Europe).
