News for Building Designers - Updates to Autodesk FormIt and Autodesk Dynamo

At Autodesk University, two major announcements that are set to reshape the building design industry were unveiled today. The first is the expansion of the Autodesk FormIt family with a new beta version now available for web browsers on both Mac and PC (supporting Chrome and Firefox). This marks a significant step forward, as it joins the existing iPad and Android tablet versions, giving designers even more flexibility to conceptualize, collaborate, and share ideas anytime, anywhere. Last year, Autodesk introduced FormIt, making it the first BIM-based conceptual design tool for architects using Apple iPads. Once a design is completed in FormIt, it can be seamlessly imported into Autodesk Revit for further development within a full BIM workflow. This integration allows for a smooth transition from early-stage ideation to detailed modeling. The evolving FormIt platform offers architects and designers greater freedom and efficiency through powerful yet user-friendly tools, enhanced by the capabilities of Autodesk 360 cloud services. Whether working in an office, at home, or on the go, users can now access their projects with ease. The latest iPad version of FormIt has been fully optimized for iOS 7, featuring improved Airdrop and print functions, along with enhanced social sharing options. New drawing tools, such as the spline function, have also been added, allowing for more creative and complex form generation. Additionally, the updated iPad app now includes mobile energy analysis tools powered by Autodesk Green Building Studio. These tools provide users with a quick assessment of their model’s potential energy performance based on factors like climate, building type, and size. This feature enables architects to integrate energy analysis much earlier in the design process, leading to more sustainable and efficient designs. A new image highlights the energy analysis features in FormIt for iPad, showing how users can now better understand the potential cost implications of their building performance. Under the "What's New in FormIt Mobile" section, the Building Program feature was also highlighted, offering more structured ways to define project requirements directly within the app. Looking ahead, Autodesk provided a sneak peek into the future of FormIt with a demonstration of a real-time collaboration feature. Leveraging the power of Autodesk 360, this upcoming feature will allow multiple users to work simultaneously on the same model across different devices. Changes made by any team member will instantly update across all platforms, streamlining the design process and enhancing teamwork, especially for geographically dispersed teams. Another image showcases the preview of this exciting new feature, emphasizing its potential to transform how designers collaborate. You can download the latest versions of Autodesk FormIt from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or visit www.autodeskformit.com to try it out today. In parallel with the FormIt updates, Autodesk also announced a major advancement in computational design for the building industry: the integration of Dynamo with Autodesk DesignScript. This merge brings together the visual programming environment of Dynamo with the powerful computational engine of DesignScript, creating what Autodesk calls “computational BIM.” Dynamo, originally launched at the AIA Conference in June 2013, is an open-source visual programming tool that allows designers to extend the parametric capabilities of Revit. With the addition of DesignScript, which offers a compact and efficient programming language, users can now create and analyze complex geometries that would be challenging to build interactively. This integration makes it easier for designers who are familiar with visual programming and scripting to control Revit models and work more closely with BIM professionals. The result is a more dynamic and flexible design process that supports innovation and precision. An image illustrates how DesignScript’s computational engine is being integrated into Dynamo’s visual interface, bringing the power of code to the BIM workflow.
