Nissan raises the price of domestic commercial vehicles by 1 to 3% from October 1st

Nissan Motor announced on August 29 that it will raise the prices of six commercial vehicles, including minivans and small trucks, in Japan starting in October. The price increases range from 30,000 to 70,000 yen per vehicle, or 1% to 3%. This decision comes as a response to rising raw material costs, particularly steel, which has put pressure on production expenses. Nissan aims to pass on part of these increased costs to consumers through higher pricing for its commercial vehicle models. However, the company has decided to hold off on price hikes for passenger cars. This move follows Toyota Motor Corporation’s strategy of limiting price increases to certain hybrid models. By delaying the increase for passenger vehicles, Nissan is likely trying to maintain competitiveness in the consumer market while adjusting its commercial vehicle pricing. This marks the first time since February 1992 that Nissan has raised prices for its commercial vehicles. Specific examples include the "Atlus H43" (2-ton small truck), which will see an increase of 70,000 yen (1.7%), the "AD/AD Expert" commercial van, which will rise by 35,000 yen (2.7%), and the "Caravan" model, which will go up by 30,000 yen (1.6%). Additionally, the "BANETTO" will be priced 50,000 yen higher, or 2.9%. Meanwhile, Mazda, which has previously sourced commercial vans from Nissan under an OEM arrangement, is reportedly considering raising the price of its "FAMILIA VAN." This suggests that the cost pressures affecting the automotive industry are spreading beyond just Nissan, with other manufacturers also looking at ways to manage their growing expenses. The overall trend reflects a broader shift in the Japanese auto industry as companies navigate supply chain challenges and inflationary pressures. While some brands are choosing to delay price hikes, Others are taking more direct action to preserve profit margins. This development could have long-term implications for both businesses and consumers in the commercial and passenger vehicle markets.
