The Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire around 4:30 AM on March 13, 2011, at 808 Holyoke Court. The incident began when a homeowner left something unattended on the stove, causing a fire that quickly spread through the split-level home. A resident had to wake a neighbor to alert the department after escaping the house. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke pouring from the front door, with low-lying smoke engulfing the first arriving engine. The fire rapidly extended to the entire first floor, and within minutes, the shift commander upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm. Fire also reached the second floor and the attic.
Access was challenging due to the burning stairway, forcing crews to use multiple ground ladders for entry and operations. Companies initially worked from the ladders to pull ceilings and access the attic fire before moving inside. Multiple hand lines were deployed from all sides of the structure. An overview photo shows the house located in a cul-de-sac with limited apparatus access, making firefighting efforts more complex.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived about 30 minutes into the response and captured several images and a video of the event. His photos show Schaumburg Engine 53, a 2000 E-One Hurricane, as the first unit on scene, along with firefighters exiting the building and the extensive damage caused by the fire. A RIT team stood by during the operation, ready to assist if needed.
Mutual aid units included trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospect Heights, and chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. Fortunately, both residents escaped safely, though a dog did not survive the fire. The temperature was in the mid-20s, causing water on the ground to freeze, which added to the challenges faced by firefighters during the operation.
