The Schaumburg Fire Department responded to a house fire around 4:30 AM on March 13, 2011. The incident occurred at 808 Holyoke Court, where a resident had left something unattended on the stove, leading to an accidental ignition. The fire spread rapidly, forcing one occupant to wake a neighbor to call for help. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was already visible from the front door of the split-level home. The smoke remained low in the cul-de-sac, surrounding the engine that had pulled up to the scene.
As crews advanced the first line, the situation escalated quickly. The shift commander upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm within minutes. The fire engulfed the entire first floor, and flames extended into the second floor and attic. Limited access to the property made operations challenging, as the stairway was compromised by the fire. Firefighters deployed multiple ground ladders around the house to gain access, with crews working from the ladders initially to pull ceilings and reach the attic.
A video clip from Larry Shapiro captures the intensity of the scene, showing fire venting through the roof while rescue teams worked to control the blaze. A RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) stood by nearby, ready to assist if needed. Multiple hand lines were used from all sides of the structure to suppress the fire.
Despite the challenges, both residents escaped safely, though a dog was lost in the fire. The temperature that morning was in the mid-20s, causing water to freeze on the ground, which added to the difficulty of the operation.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived about 30 minutes after the initial alarm and captured several images and a short video of the incident. His photos provide a detailed look at the fire's progression, including the deployment of Schaumburg Engine 53, a 2000 E-One Hurricane, and the efforts of mutual aid units from nearby departments.
Mutual aid included trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospects Heights, as well as chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. The coordinated response helped bring the fire under control, though the damage to the home was extensive.
