After experiencing a six-month decline, TDI prices finally showed signs of a recovery after the end of July and early August. China's loading price reached 1850 to 1870 USD/ton. However, due to weak demand, TDI producers are still worried about the profitability in August. Manufacturers said that to maintain the industry's continued profitability, the difference between TDI and toluene should be kept at a level of at least US$1,500/tonne, compared to a spread of only US$1220 to US$1240/tonne.
Due to the low demand in China's polyurethane industry in the first and second quarters of this year, the TDI market has a strong contrast with the double-digit growth in demand in 2004, causing manufacturers to worry. Some analysts believe that the weakening of the Chinese construction market this year has led to a drop in the demand for polyurethane foam and thus to consumer demand for TDI. In addition, the market is also worried about the weakening of US demand, which may cause China's exports of U.S. polyurethane end products to decline. However, there are still some manufacturers who are full of confidence in the recovery of market demand. They believe that the market is well-founded and the global economy is getting better. It is expected that China's MDI demand will also increase by 10% this year, and demand in other regions of Asia will increase by 6%.
In terms of market supply, the total production capacity of 165,000 tons/year of four TDI manufacturers in Japan and South Korea was suspended for maintenance in May and June. It is said that the downstream polyurethane industry is in short supply. Japan’s Mitsui Takeda Chemical Co., Ltd.’s 120,000-tonne plant was suspended for eight days due to technical failures in early July, and its operating rate after resumption of production was only 60%. South Korea Fine Chemicals is also waiting for industry profitability to pick up, and its 46,500 tons/year installation has been shut down since May. South Asia’s 30,000-ton/year TDI plant that had been shut down for two weeks due to a shortage of carbon monoxide feedstock had just resumed production.
However, some market participants believe that reducing production capacity will not have a significant impact on the current TDI market, making it difficult to keep prices rising and maintaining high levels for a long period of time because users are generally willing to maintain lower inventory levels during the summer. This pattern of oversupply clearly aggravated the worries of TDI producers.
