Spot styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) spot prices in Asia fell by about 7% last week. Industry insiders said that SBR spot prices may continue to fall this month as supply continues to exceed demand. Due to ample supply and poor market conditions, the suspension of the 75,000-ton/year SBR plant of BST Elastomers of Thailand on May 5 has not affected the market temporarily.
As of the week of May 9, SBR spot prices ranged from $3,000 to $3,100 (CIF, China). Tire manufacturers in the May and June purchase intention price of 3,000 US dollars (ton price, the same below, CIF, China), part of the offer price in the 2800 ~ 2900 US dollars (CIF, China). Due to the debt crisis in the Eurozone, the US economy is fragile and the Chinese economy is slowing, market sentiments are increasingly pessimistic. Since the beginning of April, the spot price of butadiene has dropped by 1,000 US dollars, a drop of about 29%.
