Award season is here once again, and the world's top films are being celebrated at prestigious events like the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Annies, and the Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. This year’s winners and nominees showcase incredible storytelling, groundbreaking visuals, and stunning animation that continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in film. One standout entry this year is *“The Beauty,”* which took home the VES Student Award. The film features a mesmerizing scene with a shimmering, inflated puffer fish, capturing the imagination of audiences and critics alike. The image below gives a glimpse into the creative process behind this award-winning work.

Discover how Autodesk tools power the world’s top VFX and animation studios.
These tools—like Maya, Arnold, Shotgun, and Flame—were used extensively on all five Academy Award nominees in the Best Visual Effects category: *“1917,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “The Irishman,” “The Lion King,”* and *“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”* Similarly, many of the animated films nominated for Best Animated Feature, including *“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “Klaus,” “Missing Link,”* and *“Toy Story 4,”* relied on Autodesk’s powerful software suite. ### Peaking Behind the Curtain Supporting the artists who create the magic of cinema is one of the most rewarding parts of our job. One story that truly stood out this year was LAIKA’s work on *“Missing Link.”* Their unique blend of stop-motion and digital techniques brought a fresh and visually stunning approach to animation.

LAIKA’s team developed a groundbreaking workflow that combined CGI with 3D printing to achieve their signature handcrafted stop-motion aesthetic. Brian McLean, director of Rapid Prototyping at LAIKA, explained the process: “Characters’ facial performances were rigged and animated in Maya, then exported as OBJ files. These were voxelized, sliced using Cuttlefish from Fraunhofer IGD, and sent to a Stratasys color 3D printer. Over 106,000 unique faces were printed for the film. In some scenes, up to 24 different expressions were needed per second—Lionel alone had over 39,000 faces.” Managing such an enormous number of assets required precision and organization. Steve Emerson, visual effects supervisor at LAIKA, added: “We used Shotgun Software to track every shot, schedule, plate, and reference material. It has been an essential part of our workflow since ‘ParaNorman.’” Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed. *“Missing Link”* won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, as well as Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Character in an Animated Feature at the VES Awards. This is just one example of how Autodesk customers continue to innovate and create extraordinary work. Congratulations to all the artists, teams, and studios who brought the best films of the year to life. We can't wait to see what they’ll accomplish next!
