The report emphasizes that the next few years represent a crucial window of opportunity for national automotive brands to strengthen their position in the market. It calls on the government, industry leaders, and companies to act decisively and seize this moment before it slips away.
The study highlights that, at both macro and micro levels, Chinese national brands are currently at a disadvantage compared to joint ventures. The threats they face outweigh the opportunities, with several major risks identified. These include increasingly strict regulations that may be influenced by multinational corporations, the dumping of foreign brands through low-price strategies by joint ventures, and the encroachment of these brands into lower-end markets where national brands traditionally compete. Additionally, technical barriers imposed by foreign automakers and component suppliers, along with efforts to restrict the overseas expansion of Chinese brands, pose significant challenges. Ongoing price wars further erode profit margins and weaken long-term competitiveness. Cultural influences and misleading media coverage also contribute to an unfavorable environment for national brands, while some companies have abandoned independent innovation and brand development altogether.
In response, the report outlines 13 key conclusions, including the idea that "the core of globalization in the auto industry is the brand" and that "China's auto market offers the world's largest resources and opportunities for national brands." It urges governments, industries, and enterprises to take action during this critical period. The report also provides recommendations to policymakers, industry bodies, manufacturers, media outlets, and consumers to support the growth of domestic brands.
The head of the research group emphasized that the development of national automobile brands has drawn widespread attention, with valuable lessons learned from international market experiences. The group aims to clarify future strategies and suggest ways to build strong national brands. Despite the difficult situation, the report remains optimistic, stating that national brands can achieve significant progress if they remain determined and focused.
Xu Gang, chairman of Shanghai Maple Auto, expressed that the report serves as both a challenge and a motivation. His company plans to thoroughly review the findings and align its strategy accordingly.
The research process began in July and involved extensive fieldwork, data analysis, and collaboration with various organizations. Researchers examined both the macro-environment (including economic, policy, legal, technological, social, and cultural factors) and the micro-environment (such as R&D, marketing networks, consumer behavior, and brand promotion).
