According to US media reports, the three major US automakers saw their car sales decline in January, indicating that overall market demand has declined.
GM's January sales were 195,900 units, down nearly 4% year-on-year; Ford's sales fell 0.7% to 171,200 units, but its most popular F-series truck sales increased 13% year-on-year, the best year since 2004. Performance; Fiat Chrysler sales fell 11% to 152,200 units.
After the hot holiday shopping season, January is usually the off season for car sales. However, compared with previous years, the car inventory of American car companies remained high in January this year. Royal Bank of Canada Capital Markets analysts estimate that current US car inventory is equivalent to 90 days of supply, more than 62 days in December last year and 77 days in the same period last year.
Edmunds.com, the US auto news site, expects overall US car sales to be flat in January compared to the same period last year, but another site, WardsAuto, is expected to fall 4.4% year-on-year.
In 2016, US auto sales set a new record for the second consecutive year. Most automakers plan to produce more light-duty vehicles in North America in the first quarter of this year, indicating an optimistic outlook for 2017. Industry sources expect low oil prices, cheap financing and attractive discounts to continue to boost demand for cars, and US auto sales this year are expected to remain at an all-time high of 17.5 million units.
Edmunds analysts also pointed out that considering the stock market performance and current consumer sentiment, it is expected that the Trump administration's new policy will have a greater impact on the automotive market performance than in the past.
