"In response to the growing demand for electric vehicles, we have begun to consider whether it is possible for our Chinese joint venture partners to provide us with electric vehicles," Toyota Motor China business director Hiroji Onishi's press conference at the Guangzhou Auto Show Said.
Foreign automakers generally form joint ventures with Chinese partners to conduct business in China. Toyota's joint venture partners in China are FAW and GAC.

After the “Double Points†policy came into effect in 2019, major automakers needed to accumulate points by producing and selling enough new energy vehicles to reach a threshold of 10% of annual sales. By 2020, this level will rise to 12%.
Toyota said it is also studying the feasibility of selling hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles in China. At the end of last month, after about half a year of construction, Toyota’s first hydrogen fuel station built in China has been completed. Toyota will next conduct research on the performance of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, investigating the quality of various materials, including hydrogen fuel, and assessing durability. The next stage will be to test the Chinese market by introducing Mirai, the representative model of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.
“We plan to continue to study the feasibility of fuel cell vehicles in China and decide to expand its scope, including fuel cell buses,†said Daxi Hongzhi.
