2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13

An explosion took place at 640 Industrial Drive in Cary on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the local community. According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, three workers were injured after two blasts occurred at a paint manufacturing warehouse. The incident unfolded around 1:15 p.m., when Cary police and firefighters responded to an initial explosion at Fox Valley Services. A second explosion followed shortly after emergency crews arrived, causing significant structural damage to the two-story building. The front of the brick structure was partially blown off, while a smaller hole appeared at the rear. Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control, which was finally extinguished by around 5 p.m. Local business owner Jim Hursh, who lives just a block away, described the scene as chaotic. "We walked up to the door, and holy crap—there was major smoke coming out of the building," he said. He then heard a second explosion and watched as fire trucks and ambulances rushed to the scene. One individual with facial burns was seen being assisted. Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens confirmed that all three injured workers were taken to local hospitals, though their conditions were not immediately known. He added that the injuries were not considered life-threatening. A hazardous materials team was also deployed due to potential chemical exposure from the paint facility. Tyler Tobolt, a local photographer, shared his account of the event, noting that the Cary Fire Department arrived around 3 p.m. and faced multiple explosions. He also mentioned that a hazmat response was called in due to possible chemical spills. Photos from the scene can be viewed online, showing the extent of the damage. Scott Peterson, another witness, provided additional details, describing the front wall of the building as partially destroyed. He noted that flammable tanks nearby were a major concern, and that multiple fire units were on the scene. Aerial footage from channels 5 and 7 captured the dramatic situation, as evacuations were carried out for about two blocks. The Daily Herald has also covered the incident, offering more insight into the ongoing investigation. Thanks to Chris for sharing the updates.
