SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Nov. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has officially announced the acquisition of Spacemaker for $240 million in cash. This strategic move marks a significant step forward in integrating AI-driven design solutions into Autodesk’s portfolio, enhancing its capabilities in architecture and urban planning.
Spacemaker, based in Oslo, Norway, leverages cloud-based AI and generative design to help architects and developers make faster, more informed early-stage decisions. By analyzing vast amounts of data such as terrain, wind patterns, zoning laws, and traffic flow, the platform enables users to quickly generate and optimize design alternatives. This not only speeds up the process but also supports more sustainable outcomes from the very beginning.
The acquisition is expected to close during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends on January 31, 2021, pending standard closing conditions. Once integrated, Spacemaker will provide Autodesk with a powerful tool to drive automation and outcome-based design, empowering architects to focus more on creativity while relying on AI for optimization and iteration.
Andrew Anagnost, CEO and President of Autodesk, emphasized the importance of speed and sustainability in urban planning, especially as the global population continues to grow. “Spacemaker represents a fundamental shift in how we imagine and build cities,†he said. “It gives designers the tools they need to create and test ideas in minutes, helping us build healthier, more sustainable environments.â€
Amy Bunszel, Senior Vice President for AEC Design Solutions at Autodesk, added that the acquisition reflects the company’s commitment to supporting architects and designers in making a positive impact on the world. “With Spacemaker’s innovative technology, we can empower professionals to make smarter decisions and tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our planet today.â€
Havard Haukeland, CEO and co-founder of Spacemaker, expressed excitement about the partnership. “We’ve always aimed to help teams develop more sustainable cities, and Autodesk shares our vision. This acquisition will allow us to scale our solution globally and accelerate our mission.â€
Daniel Kjørberg Siraj, CEO of OBOS, a Norwegian real estate developer, praised Spacemaker’s role in driving digital transformation. “Innovators like Spacemaker are critical to advancing sustainable development, and joining forces with Autodesk will give them the reach they need to make an even bigger impact.â€
This acquisition underscores Autodesk’s ongoing efforts to lead in the digital transformation of the design and construction industries. With Spacemaker’s advanced AI capabilities, the company is well-positioned to support architects, engineers, and urban planners in creating better, more sustainable built environments.
