Autodesk Acquires Spacemaker: Offers Architects AI-powered Generative Design to Explore Best Urban Design Options

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Nov. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has made a significant move in the world of design and construction by announcing its agreement to acquire Spacemaker for $240 million, net of cash. This strategic acquisition is expected to close during Autodesk’s fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, which ends on January 31, 2021, pending standard closing conditions. Spacemaker, based in Oslo, Norway, is a leader in using cloud-based AI and generative design to help architects, urban planners, and real estate developers make faster, more informed early-stage decisions. Their platform allows users to quickly generate and optimize design alternatives while considering factors like terrain, zoning, traffic, and sustainability. This not only speeds up the design process but also ensures that projects are more environmentally friendly from the start. The integration of Spacemaker into Autodesk’s ecosystem is expected to enhance the company's ability to deliver outcome-based design solutions powered by AI. By combining Spacemaker’s innovative tools with Autodesk’s existing software, the two companies aim to empower designers to focus more on creativity and less on repetitive tasks. Andrew Anagnost, CEO and President of Autodesk, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “Spacemaker is a lesson in the power of insights and automation, giving designers the ability to create and test urban design ideas in minutes. With two billion more people expected to call our planet home by 2050, speed of design and sustainability in urban planning must be priorities.” Amy Bunszel, Senior Vice President for AEC Design Solutions at Autodesk, added, “This acquisition reflects our commitment to advancing the work of architects and designers, helping them shape a better future for everyone.” Havard Haukeland, CEO and co-founder of Spacemaker, expressed his excitement about the partnership, saying, “Autodesk shares our goal to create a healthier planet for everyone and is uniquely positioned to more rapidly place our product in the hands of planning teams everywhere.” Daniel Kjørberg Siraj, CEO of OBOS, highlighted the impact of Spacemaker in Norway, noting, “Real-estate developers in Norway are leading the digital transformation in the building sector, and Spacemaker is a game-changer in this space.” This acquisition marks a major step forward for Autodesk as it continues to invest in technologies that support sustainable and efficient design practices. The collaboration between Autodesk and Spacemaker is set to redefine how cities are planned and built, ensuring a more sustainable and livable future for all.
