Saturday morning at a vacant building fire on 4046 Van Buren Street. This is my first encounter with the new safety marking system that's being implemented by the Chicago Fire Department. The markings are simple yet effective—red squares, squares with one diagonal slash, or squares with an 'X'—each representing varying degrees of risk. Interior operations require assessment and approval before any firefighter can enter. I think we'll see these signs become quite common at fire scenes moving forward.
I managed to get some decent shots of the operation, including one of the newer firefighting rigs they've introduced. It’s fascinating how technology and safety measures are evolving within the department.
Attached are a few images capturing different aspects of the scene. First up is Engine 44 positioned on a hydrant, looking pretty sharp with its setup. Next is a close-up of the vacant building marked with those new safety indicators—a clear indication of the level of caution required. There’s also a shot of Truck 26 scaling the roof with its ladder, which is always an impressive sight. You’ll notice Engine 95 parked nearby, also hooked up to a hydrant, ensuring there’s no shortage of water during the operation.
In another image, you can see Squad 2 setting up their equipment, while Squad 2A’s snorkel is visible in the background. The scene was bustling with activity, with multiple units working together to manage the situation. Paramedic Field Chief 4-5-4 was present too, highlighting the comprehensive support network in place for emergencies like this.
It’s not just about the equipment; it’s about teamwork and preparedness. The new marking system is just one example of how the department is stepping up its game to ensure firefighter safety. These changes are essential as the risks firefighters face continue to evolve.
Overall, it was a busy morning, but it’s reassuring to see the progress being made. Looking forward to seeing more of these new systems in action!
