Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the U.S. and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer have smart features and will revert to basic home chargers. Meanwhile, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once their software support is discontinued.
ChargeLab, a top provider of back-end management software for commercial EV charging networks, is stepping in to help affected users. Commercial site hosts who rely on Enel X Way’s services are encouraged to reach out to ChargeLab immediately to explore migration options before the servers are permanently shut down.
The JuiceBox charger first launched in 2013, developed by eMotorWerks, a San Carlos-based startup. In 2017, eMotorWerks was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant. The product was later rebranded under Enel X Way, as part of Enel's push into North America with EV charging and other energy solutions.
Enel claims the decision to exit the North American market is due to a strategic shift, focusing instead on countries where it has electricity retail operations — primarily in Europe. However, this move has left many commercial users in a difficult position, especially those relying on Enel X Way’s software for managing their charging infrastructure.
ChargeLab offers a hardware-agnostic platform that supports over 100 EV charger models from various manufacturers, including ABB, Eaton, Wallbox, and more. The company has been working closely with Enel X Way on integration testing, even before the official shutdown announcement.

Utilities and DERMS aggregators are advised to remove JuiceBox chargers from approved equipment lists for programs like TOU and demand response.
