ChargeLab offers software support for orphaned Enel X Way EV chargers

Enel X Way has officially announced the closure of its EV charging operations in the United States and Canada, effective October 11, 2024. This means that all residential JuiceBox chargers will no longer have smart features and will revert to basic home charging units. Meanwhile, commercial Enel X Way chargers will lose all functionality once their software support ends. In response to this development, ChargeLab, a top provider of back-end management software for commercial EV charging networks, is offering to take over compatible Enel X Way chargers in the U.S. and Canada. Commercial site hosts affected by the shutdown are urged to reach out to ChargeLab immediately to explore migration options before the servers are permanently turned off. The JuiceBox charger first launched in 2013, developed by eMotorWerks, a California-based startup. In 2017, eMotorWerks was acquired by Enel S.p.A., an Italian energy giant. The product became part of Enel’s broader EV charging strategy, eventually rebranded under Enel X Way. Enel claims the decision to shut down North American operations is part of a strategic shift to focus on countries where it has a retail electricity presence—primarily Europe. ChargeLab offers a hardware-agnostic platform designed to manage EV chargers at scale. Their software supports over 100 EV charger models from various manufacturers, including ABB, Eaton, Wallbox, and more. They had been working closely with Enel X Way's team in North America, even before the official announcement. “We understand the frustration of receiving only 10 days’ notice,” said Shaun Stewart, President of ChargeLab. “We’re committed to helping Enel X Way customers transition smoothly. Please contact us today to start the process.” Migrating to ChargeLab allows site hosts to keep their charging infrastructure operational after Enel X Way’s servers go offline. However, migrating residential JuiceBox units isn’t recommended due to technical limitations and complexity. ChargeLab advises utilities and DERMS aggregators to remove JuiceBox from approved equipment lists for programs like TOU and demand response. Despite Enel X Way’s exit, EV adoption continues to grow across North America. Companies like ChargeLab are stepping up to ensure reliable, scalable, and user-friendly EV charging solutions for drivers and operators alike. If you're a commercial site host using Enel X Way, now is the time to act. Contact ChargeLab at 1 (800) 636-0986 ext. 210 to learn more about your options.
