From excerpts sourced from Firehousenews.com:
In July, we saw a somber reminder of the dangers faced by our nation’s bravest. Sixteen firefighters tragically lost their lives while serving their communities, many succumbing to health-related issues such as heart disease and hypertension. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) data indicates that July has emerged as one of the deadliest months in recent firefighting history. In fact, in June 2013, there were 25 firefighter fatalities, including the tragic loss of 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots during a wildfire.
Ron Siarnicki, the executive director of the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation, emphasized the critical need for firefighters to stay vigilant, particularly as temperatures soar. He highlighted the significance of adequate hydration, citing numerous studies that underscore the risks associated with dehydration. Firefighters who neglect to drink enough water face a heightened risk of severe heat-related illnesses. Symptoms like muscle cramps, nausea, or dizziness should prompt immediate medical attention. Without proper hydration, the blood can thicken, exacerbating these risks.
Among those who made the ultimate sacrifice last month are:
- Lt. Andrew Russell, aged 48, from the Harrison Township Fire Department in Michigan, passed away on July 2 following complications from shoulder surgery.
- Firefighter Lancy A. Crawford, 50, from the Plainview AR Volunteer Fire Department, lost his life on July 7 after his vehicle veered off the road and rolled over.
- Firefighter Will Hawkins, 22, and Firefighter Jacob O’Malley, 27, both from the Nevada Bureau of Land Management, were killed on July 10 in separate vehicle accidents while checking for lightning strikes.

- Firefighter Tim McClanahan, 46, from the Lewes Fire Department in Delaware, died on July 11 after falling from a helicopter during hoist training exercises.
- Chief Engineer Richard Zadorozny, 66, from the Eatontown Fire Department in New Jersey, passed away at home hours after responding to an emergency call.
- Captain Eric Kohlbauer, 52, from the Freeport Rural Fire Protection District in Illinois, collapsed during a pump drill and later died on July 12.
- Firefighter Joseph T. DeMarinis, 32, from the Clermont Fire Department in Florida, fell ill during his shift and died on July 14.
- Fire Coordinator John Scott, 71, from the Tioga County Fire Department in New York, was fatally struck while working on a communications tower on July 20.
- Firefighter John Ishman, 60, from the Hilltop Fire Department in Pennsylvania, met his untimely death on July 23 while assisting in parking a fire engine.
- Firefighter Gabriel Lee, 42, from the Philadelphia Fire Department, was found unresponsive in the firehouse gym on July 23.
- Firefighter Ed Cosgrove, 53, from the Green Township Fire Protection District in Missouri, collapsed on July 24 while battling a camper fire.
- Firefighter Charles Waterbury, 56, from the Orford Fire Department in New Hampshire, fell ill on July 24 while fighting a brush fire.
- Dozer Operator Robert O. Reagan III, 35, perished on July 26 when his vehicle overturned while working for CAL Fire.
- Captain Michael Schultz, 47, from the Hoyt Fire Department in Kansas, died in a crash on July 27 after his tanker blew a tire and overturned.
As we mourn these losses, it is vital that we honor their service and prioritize the safety of all first responders.
