From the Bensenville Professional Firefighters Association, Local 2968 Facebook page:
Last Friday, a single firefighter in our department was left to cover the entire town of Bensenville for nearly 20 minutes. During this time, multiple emergency calls required the immediate attention of seven out of the eight currently staffed firefighters. To put this into perspective, last year under similar circumstances with a full complement of personnel, we would have had seven out of eleven firefighters available. Having just one firefighter responsible for protecting our community instead of the potential four is a scenario that puts everyone at risk. If additional calls had come in during those critical moments, nearby towns might have had to step in, which would have significantly delayed response times for both fire and medical emergencies. Fortunately, no further incidents occurred during that period.
There’s been some confusion regarding what passing our upcoming referendum means for our current situation. Let me clarify—it doesn’t guarantee that situations like these won't happen again. No matter how many firefighters we have, accidents and property damage can still occur. However, increasing our staffing reduces the likelihood of such scenarios arising. Currently, when fully staffed, we have eight firefighters on duty each shift. If the referendum fails, we could drop down to as few as five firefighters per day. This reduction increases the odds that Bensenville’s own resources won’t be available when you dial 911.
Please consider voting yes for our referendum so we can restore staffing levels to a maximum of eleven firefighters per day. Together, we can ensure faster, safer responses for everyone in our community. #helpbfpd2

For context, here’s a bit more detail about why this matters. Our department plays a crucial role not just in firefighting but also in providing emergency medical services. With fewer personnel, even routine tasks become more challenging. Imagine being the only person on call when two separate emergencies unfold simultaneously—every second counts, and every firefighter makes a difference.
We’re not just asking for more funding; we’re advocating for your safety. Every vote counts, and every “yes†brings us closer to ensuring that our first responders are prepared for anything. Stay safe, stay informed, and let’s work together to support those who protect us daily.
