Late Friday afternoon (July 10th, 2020), Wheeling firefighters along with several neighboring departments were called out to respond to a confirmed structure fire at 15 Brougham Drive. According to reports, officers on the scene confirmed the presence of a fire, with thick plumes of smoke clearly visible from miles away. The fire broke out in a mobile home located within the Whippletree Village mobile home park off McHenry Road in Wheeling. Upon arrival, crews discovered a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, the fire having already spread to adjacent units on both sides.
Initial reports suggested there may have been two children trapped inside, but these claims were later determined to be false. Firefighters immediately initiated a defensive attack strategy, with both Wheeling engines deploying their hoses right away. Mutual aid companies from nearby towns including Prospect Heights, Buffalo Grove, Northbrook, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Long Grove, Schaumburg, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Lake Forest, and Lake Zurich quickly arrived to provide additional manpower and resources.
The intense heat made firefighting efforts challenging, as crews worked tirelessly to contain the blaze across three affected mobile homes. Ultimately, the original structure was completely destroyed, while the neighboring units sustained severe damage, rendering them uninhabitable. Despite the severity of the situation, no injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
Attached below are several images captured by Larry Shapiro, showing the extent of the fire and the heroic efforts of the firefighters battling the inferno. Each image highlights different aspects of the operation, from the initial deployment of water hoses to the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies working together to control the rapidly spreading flames.
As the sun began to set, the scene remained tense, with firefighters continuing their efforts well into the evening hours. The community has expressed gratitude for the swift response and dedication shown by all involved departments. Local authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have started accidentally within the mobile home.
