CFD Apparatus History – Ward LaFrance

I just received some fascinating materials from Bill Friedrich to complement our ongoing series about the Ward LaFrance apparatus utilized by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). Bill was kind enough to share copies of the 1970 Ward LaFrance sales brochures that showcased these iconic vehicles. If you're catching up, you can revisit previous installments here, here, here, and here. One of the highlights is this impressive Ward LaFrance brochure featuring all seven of the 2,000-GPM engines the company supplied to Chicago in 1970. It's a fantastic glimpse into the firefighting technology of the era. This particular image comes from Bill Friedrich's extensive collection, and it beautifully captures the lineup of these powerful machines. Another standout piece is a detailed view of one of those 1970 Ward LaFrance 2,000-GPM engines. The accompanying specifications provide an in-depth look at what made these vehicles so advanced for their time. Every detail is accounted for, from the design to the technical specifications, making it a treasure trove for anyone interested in fire apparatus history. And let’s not forget the impressive 1970 Ward LaFrance/Grove 100’ ladder truck. This model was equipped with a 300-gallon booster tank, a reliable Hale 2CBP booster pump, and a Grove 4S-100 ladder. As the brochure notes, these trucks also came loaded with "many other items of special equipment." Again, this image is part of Bill Friedrich's collection, offering a comprehensive view of these essential firefighting tools. These brochures really bring the past to life, allowing us to appreciate the craftsmanship and innovation that went into creating these fire engines and ladder trucks. They were not just vehicles; they were lifelines for the communities they served. I’m grateful to Bill for sharing these resources, as they add so much depth to our understanding of how firefighting evolved over the decades.
