CFD Apparatus History – Ward LaFrance

Bill Friedrich recently shared some valuable materials with us—copies of the 1970 Ward LaFrance sales brochures highlighting the apparatus utilized by the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). These documents provide a fascinating glimpse into the firefighting vehicles of that era. For those interested, previous posts from this series can be accessed [here](#), [here](#), [here](#), and [here](#). Attached is a particularly striking image from the brochure, showcasing all seven of the Ward LaFrance 2,000-GPM fire engines that were part of the CFD fleet back in 1970. This photo not only captures the sheer power and presence of these vehicles but also serves as a testament to the advanced engineering of the time. The accompanying details and specifications paint a vivid picture of what it was like to operate such machinery during that period. Special thanks to Bill Friedrich for allowing us to share his collection. Another intriguing piece from the same set is an illustration of one of the 1970 Ward LaFrance 2,000-GPM engines, this time featuring comprehensive technical data. Every aspect of the vehicle—from its dimensions and weight to its hydraulic systems—is meticulously documented. It’s remarkable how much thought and precision went into designing these machines, ensuring they could handle the demands of firefighting with both efficiency and reliability. Finally, we have an image that focuses on a 1970 Ward LaFrance/Grove 100-foot aerial ladder truck. Equipped with a 300-gallon booster tank, a Hale 2CBP booster pump, and a Grove 4S-100 ladder, this vehicle was nothing short of state-of-the-art at the time. The brochure highlights additional specialized features that made these trucks indispensable for urban firefighting operations. Again, we owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Friedrich for preserving these historical artifacts and sharing them with us. These brochures not only serve as a historical record but also offer insight into the evolution of firefighting technology. They remind us of the dedication and innovation that have always been at the heart of firefighting efforts. If you're curious about the specific models or configurations, feel free to explore the links provided earlier or reach out directly. There's so much more to learn and appreciate when it comes to these iconic pieces of firefighting history!
