As we step into the new year, the Fusion 360 team is already delivering on some of the exciting features announced at Autodesk University last November. Two standout additions include sheet metal capabilities and the branching-and-merging functionality, both of which are making their way into the product innovation platform. These updates, along with others in the pipeline, continue to redefine the essence of product development software by integrating CAD, CAM, and CAE into one seamless cloud-connected experience.
If you fold it, it will CAM. One of the most eagerly awaited features is finally here. Sheet metal design has been the top request in Fusion 360 forums and the Ideastation, and it’s now available in tech preview mode by invitation. For the first time ever, you can create sheet metal parts and seamlessly transition to the CAM workspace to generate toolpaths for cutting flat patterns—all within a single workflow. Get those waterjets, plasma cutters, and lasers ready, as this feature is bound to push your equipment to new limits.
Let’s git together. Collaboration is crucial for software engineers, but hardware engineers often face unique challenges. Fusion 360’s branching-and-merging functionality (currently in tech preview) enables users to simultaneously explore design ideas and merge them back into the master branch without conflicts. Say goodbye to convoluted workflows or duplicate files just to reintegrate your work into the main assembly. Design becomes a true democracy with this feature, ensuring the best designs always rise to the top.
The cloud’s the limit. This month, Fusion 360 in the browser takes another leap forward as it enters tech preview mode (by invitation) for North American users. The team has been working tirelessly to ensure Fusion 360 is as versatile as possible, no matter the device—whether you’re on a Chromebook, an iPad, or a Linux desktop. Your CAD tools should adapt to you, not the other way around.
The EAGLE has landed. Last November, we mentioned that ECAD was coming to Fusion 360, and while that’s still in progress, there’s other news worth sharing. Autodesk EAGLE has launched as a subscription offering. Since joining Autodesk last summer, the team has been rapidly enhancing and expanding its features. Product teams needing PCB design now have both free and paid subscription options. For more details, visit this link.
That’s quite a bit of Fusion 360 goodness already, and it’s only February. Rest assured, we have even more surprises in store for the remainder of 2017. The future looks bright, and the best is yet to come.
*Please note that roadmaps are plans, not guarantees. While we’re thrilled to bring new features to life, the development, release, and timing remain entirely up to us. Additionally, these roadmaps should not influence purchasing decisions.
There’s still so much more to look forward to, and I’m personally excited to see where this journey takes us next!
