I just got some updates from jg-tc.com about what’s been happening in Mattoon regarding their ambulance services. It seems like things have taken quite a turn.
As of this morning, the Mattoon Fire Department officially stopped providing ambulance services at the scheduled time of 7 a.m. This means that now, the two private ambulance companies—Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service and Dunn’s Ambulance—are fully responsible for all the local emergency transport needs. The decision to end the fire department’s ambulance service was made by city officials after the Mattoon City Council voted on July 18, 2017. They cited it as a necessary cost-cutting move, and the last day of the fire department's service was set for July 25.
While the firefighters are clearly disappointed about losing their role in providing ambulance services, they do feel somewhat relieved that the city has decided to keep the advanced life support equipment used by the fire department operational. Even though they won’t be directly transporting patients anymore, firefighters will still be dispatched to emergency scenes if there’s any delay in getting an ambulance on-site. In those cases, firefighters can offer advanced life support care until the private ambulance crew arrives to take over.
Bart Owen, who’s the president of Mattoon Firefighters Local 691, mentioned that earlier today, the team moved all the advanced life support gear from the three former fire department ambulances onto three fire trucks. It’s a bit of a transition period, and for now, the city has decided to store the old ambulances in case they’re needed later.
Interestingly, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service has been serving Mattoon since 1934, while Dunn’s Ambulance, which is based out of nearby Taylorville, began its operations in Mattoon back in 2008. The fire department’s own ambulance service only went full-time in 2011.
City officials argue that the fire department’s ambulance service wasn’t financially sustainable and overlapped with the work already being done by these private companies. On the other hand, the firefighters’ union insists that the service actually brought in crucial revenue for the city and ensured consistent coverage for emergencies in Mattoon.
Right now, both sides are working through the grievance process, and there’s also an ongoing arbitration for a new contract. Meanwhile, the city plans to hold onto the old ambulances for the time being, just in case.
It’s definitely a significant change for the community, and I’ll keep an eye out for further developments. Thanks to Dennis for sharing this update!
