Hey everyone,
I just wanted to share some updates on what's been happening with the Mattoon Fire Department's ambulance service. As of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, the city officially ended its ambulance service, which had been running since 2011. Now, the two private services in town—Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance Service and Dunn’s Ambulance—are taking over all the local emergency calls. The decision to shut down the city-run service was made back in July after the council voted to cut costs.
While the firefighters are clearly bummed about losing their role in providing ambulance services, they’re grateful that the city decided to keep the advanced life support gear operational. Even though they won’t be handling emergency transport anymore, firefighters will still be called out to incidents if there’s any delay in getting an ambulance there. They’ll also be equipped to offer advanced life support care until the private ambulance team shows up.
Interestingly, Bart Owen, who heads the Mattoon Firefighters Local 691, mentioned that earlier this week, the firefighters moved all the advanced life support tools from the old ambulances directly onto three fire trucks. It seems like they're trying to make the transition as smooth as possible.
For context, Mitchell-Jerdan has been around since 1934, while Dunn’s has been serving Mattoon residents since 2008. Both have been working alongside the fire department's service for years, so this change might feel like more of a shift than a complete overhaul.
The city is keeping the three former ambulances in storage for now, just in case. Meanwhile, both sides—the city administration and the firefighters’ union—are still going through some grievance procedures and arbitration to settle things related to the contract and the service termination.
The city argues that the fire department's ambulance service wasn’t profitable and overlapped too much with the private providers. On the flip side, the firefighters' union insists that the service was actually generating important revenue and ensuring reliable ambulance coverage for the community.
Anyway, it’s definitely a big change for Mattoon, and I’m sure there will be more developments as things progress. Let me know if you hear anything else!
Thanks,
Dennis
