One hurt at Schaumburg 2-11 fire in a 7-story apartment building

The Schaumburg Fire Department was alerted to an automatic fire alarm before 6 a.m. on Saturday, followed by multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke at 1234 Valley Lake Drive. Engine 54 was the first unit to arrive and connected to the building’s standpipe system. Upon entering, firefighters encountered residents in the lobby and on balconies of the seven-story building. As they reached the fire floor, heavy smoke made it difficult to locate the source, but they eventually identified the unit that was burning. An 85-year-old resident of the affected apartment sustained second-degree burns to her chest and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. She was later transferred to Loyola University Hospital’s burn center for further treatment. Two hose lines were deployed, allowing crews to contain the fire within the unit of origin. The incident escalated to a 2-11 alarm, with additional ambulances dispatched as a precaution. Firefighters rescued several residents who had taken refuge on their balconies to escape the smoke. Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene and captured several images documenting the response. His photos show Engine 52 arriving at the front driveway alongside Ambulance 52, Battalion 5, and Truck 52. Additional shots depict firefighters bringing equipment into the building, the fire located on the fourth-floor rear of the structure, and investigators examining the fire unit during overhaul. Other images show firefighters resting on the seventh-floor balcony after completing a secondary search and a command post with mutual aid units waiting for assignments. Mutual aid support came from Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Itasca, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Palatine Rural, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, and Bloomingdale. Ambulances arrived from Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Roselle, Bensenville, Wheeling, and Glenside. Chief officers from Arlington Heights, Palatine Rural, and Itasca also responded. The Chicago Tribune reported that the woman was in critical condition and later moved to Loyola for advanced care. Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to the fifth floor, though the fourth floor suffered significant damage. Residents from 15 apartments on that floor were displaced and assisted by the Red Cross. Larry has more photos available in a gallery [here].
