Southwestern Illinois College Fire Science Program receives vintage fire engine

I just came across this interesting story about a retired firefighter who donated an old fire truck to a local college. It’s really inspiring to see someone giving back in such a meaningful way. Let me share the details I found. Daniel Lougeay, a former firefighter from Fairview Heights, recently gave an in-kind donation of a classic fire engine to the Fire Science Program at Southwestern Illinois College. This particular vehicle is a 1963 Chevrolet Howe fire engine that he purchased back in 2002 from the Willisville Fire Department. Over the years, he used it in parades and antique fire truck exhibitions. Now, it will serve a new purpose as part of the college's educational resources. The truck will be housed at the Clay Baitman Fire Science Center in Belleville, which is where all the fire science classes take place. This center plays a crucial role in training the next generation of firefighters, with the program graduating over 30 firefighters each year. The donation couldn’t have come at a better time, as the truck will allow students to practice essential skills like operating a fire hose pump. Daniel shared his thoughts on the donation, saying, “Being able to help the next generation of firefighters become the best they can be, not only for themselves but for the safety of the public, is what truly matters.” He also expressed pride in contributing to one of the top fire science programs in the region. Southwestern Illinois College offers both an Associate in Applied Science degree in Fire Science (with two specializations and 11 certificate programs) and various hands-on training opportunities. For anyone interested in learning more about the Fire Science Program, they can reach out directly to Program Coordinator Curt Lougeay at 618-234-5138. If you're thinking about making a donation to support the college, you can find more information on their website at swic.edu/community/foundation/ways-to-give/. It’s always heartening to see individuals investing in education and community development. Daniel’s contribution not only benefits current students but ensures that future generations of firefighters will have access to quality training tools. This kind of generosity helps build stronger, safer communities, and it’s something we should all strive to emulate in our own ways.
